Just follow these 5 steps to get the most revenue out of 1 ad space. This solution does not depend on Javascript or something else.

  1. register your adsense account
    this step seems to be pretty obsolete ;)
  2. create your adsense banner
    just go ahead into your adsense-setup page and create the adsense block you like.
  3. blend the adsense banner into your website
    use the same color for the text, the same background-color and border-color as you use on your website.
  4. create your own alternate ad
    *Magic begins* google allows you to use an alternate ad, which will be shown if google has no ad that fits to your page. We will create our own ( howto for firefox users ):

    1. right-click on your adsense banner, -> “This Frame” -> “View Frame Source”
    2. copy/paste the displayed HTML-code into a new file. i.e. alternate_468x60.htm
    3. Edit the code to fit your needs. Insert your own ad, create clean code ;).
    4. upload the file to your webserver
    5. add your alternate url to the adsense code:
      google_alternate_ad_url = "http://www.kloeschen.com/alternate_468x60.htm";
  5. add a noscript ad
    The adsense banner won’t be displayed if the user has javascript disabled. With a noscript block we will display our own alternate ad:

Therefor I needed a way to get a defined number of random posts.
And guess what? There is already a function providing this feature: get_posts()

To get 4 random posts just use this function call:

get_posts(‘numberposts=4&orderby=rand()’);

Since the argument orderby will be forwarded to the SQL statement, we will get 4 random posts from database. There are several more arguments, which can be found in the codex.
